In cardiovascular system,

1. what is the function of the system in series? What cardiovascular variables does the series system help to maintain? If the cardiovascular system evolved to only have a series component and not the parallel component, draw and explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide would travel through the body. Consider the heart as a pump.

2. what is the function of the system in parallel? What cardiovascular variables does the parallel system help to maintain? If the cardiovascular system evolved to only have a parallel component and not the series component, draw and explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide would travel through the body. Consider the heart as a pump in your response

Answer #1

1. The right and left sides of the heart are aligned in series like the systemic circulation and the pulmonary circulation. The heart has two pumps connected in series, due to which the output of left and right side of the heart are interdependent. This series mode of arrangement enables it to maintain the volume of the blood in both sides. If the cardiovascular system has evolved only as a series component and not as a parallel component, there will not be a separate passage for oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

2. The circulation in organs other than lungs are in parallel. Being parallel the circulation to the organs are supplied based on the need without any disturbance to the other organs.
