Microbial associations can be divided into two parts and five sub classifications, namely,

i) Symbiotic - Organisms that lives in close nutritional relationships

a) Mutualism - dependent organisms in which both the members are benefited.

b) Commensalism - One member is benefited and the other is not.

c) Parasitism - The parasite is benefited and the host is harmed.

ii) Non symbiotic - free living organisms

a) Synergism - Cooperative members and benefited by sharing nutrients.

b) Antagonism - Some members are inhibited and destroyed by the other members.
