Calculate the fraction of limonene and the mass percent of limonene in the limonene water mixture that would steam distill at 97.4℃. The vapor pressure of water at 97.4℃ is 690 torr. Assume that the atmospheric pressure is 760. Would the percent limonene be greater, the same or less in the mixture that steam distilled at 99 ℃?

Answer #1

Ans :

The liquid attains boiling point , when its vapor pressure becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure. Here the liquid distills at 97.4oC when the vapor pressure is 690 torr.

But if the mixture distills at 99oC , it indicates that the vapor pressure of the liquid will be more here.

Addition of limonene (non volatile solute) decreases the vapor pressure of water , so if the liquid has higher vapor pressure , the percent limonene will be less in the mixture that steam distilled at 99oC as compared to the earlier one.
