6. Post-Lab Assignment (35 pts) You MUST turn this paper in to your TA at the start of the NEXT LAB YOUR Name: Lab room: Partner Name: Lab time TA Name: If you did not collect any data or are missing some data to complete this post-lab, then give your source of data here and give a brief explanation why you have missing data. If you use your own data you can go straight to question 1, no need to add anything here 1. (3 pts.) This is an oxidation reaction. There are TWO-OH groups that could be oxidized, therefore the reaction could be oxidation of one of the -OH groups only, oxidation of the other -OH group only, or oxidation of both of the -OH groups. Give the products for these 3 possible oxidation reactions, in each case oxidize the circled -OH group or groups ONLY. You should assume that the unspecified oxidizing agents 1, 2 and 3 are actually capable of performing the specified oxidation reactions. Assume also that the PRIMARY alcohol will oxidize to form an ALDEHYDE, not a carboxylic acid. oxidizing reagent 1 oxidizing reagent 2 oxidizing reagent3 2. (1 pt.) Complete the following equation with the structure of the product you believe you made in the oxidation reaction of the diol. You will be CLAIMING that you know the identity of this product. In question2 you will ARGUE in support of this CLAIM by providing EVIDENCE to support it. OH NaOCI HO 3. (3 pts.) Give a brief ARGUMENT to support your CLAIM above. You will need to support you ARGUMENT using EVIDENCE (in other words, what evidence do you have that the product is what you say it is above) 10
