4. Null (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis are:

H0 : American men and women does not differ with regard to how many friends they have.

H1 : American men and women differ with regard to how many friends they have.

5. Parameters of interest are:

Sample means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are $\overline{x_{m}}$ and $\overline{x_{f}}$ respectively

Sample variance of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are $\overline{\sigma _{m}}$ and $\overline{\sigma _{f}}$   respectively (may be needed for testing)

Population means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are  $\mu _{m}$ and $\mu _{f}$ respectively

6. Null (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis in symbols are:

As we are checking for is there any difference, So in testing we check for its means

H0: $\mu _{m}$ = $\mu _{f}$

H1: $\mu _{m}$ $\neq$$\mu _{f}$

where  $\mu _{m}$ and $\mu _{f}$ are population means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have respectively. so we with for population mean based on sample information.
