4. Null (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis are:

H0 : American men and women does not differ with regard to how many friends they have.

H1 : American men and women differ with regard to how many friends they have.

5. Parameters of interest are:

Sample means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are \overline{x_{m}} and \overline{x_{f}} respectively

Sample variance of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are \overline{\sigma _{m}} and \overline{\sigma _{f}}   respectively (may be needed for testing)

Population means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have are  \mu _{m} and \mu _{f} respectively

6. Null (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis in symbols are:

As we are checking for is there any difference, So in testing we check for its means

H0: \mu _{m} = \mu _{f}

H1: \mu _{m} \neq\mu _{f}

where  \mu _{m} and \mu _{f} are population means of men and women with regard to how many friends they have respectively. so we with for population mean based on sample information.
