Let M be the magnitude of an earthquake, and I​​​​​​R be its relative intensity.

Given: M = log10 IR

and M=5.1

..5.1 = log10 (IR)

D IR= 1051

G IR= 1.2589 x 10^{5}

Hence, the relative intensity of the earthquake is 1.2589 x 10^{5} .

Note: For the measurement of parameters of an earthquake, we generally use common logarithm (i.e. logarithm to the base 10, not base e).
