On job training is the type of training where the employee after joining gets hand on experience and starts to learn while working on live cases and customers. Here the type of learning is experiential.

Pros

It is the most effective way of learning the trades, even when the knowledge is tacit

It is the quickest way to make the employee responsible

When the environment and the skill level of the employee is high the effectiveness is very good

Example: Mid and high level sales team works best in the OJT format

Cons

It is high risk as there are high chances of error.

It is fully dependent on the people who are the supervisor, as the effectiveness depends on them.

If the skill level is low and the technology involved is high, the results are poor

Example: If a factory worker is put to sophisticated level of technology in terms of operation there is a bottleneck
