Each gamete receives a single allele of each trait at the time of cell division from each parent. The law of segregation states the separation of the two alleles of each trait is random and there is a 50% chance of either allele to be transferred in either gamete.

The law of independent assortment states that the separation of the allele of one gene is independent of an allele of the other gene. Therefore, the law of independent assortment describes the behavior of the separation of the two or more genes with respect to one another.
