Yes , weight or density of an object have a role in floating of objects of in a fluid. If the density / weight of an object is more than the density / weight of the liquid, then it sinks in the liquid. Object that have density less than the density of the fluid will float and vice and versa will sink. Archimedes' principle reasons this statement. This is because the buoyant force acting on the object is less than the weight of the object. If the density of the object is less than the density of the liquid, then it floats on the surface of the liquid.
