Answer #1

1). A. chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in leaves and is important biomolecule to carry out photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light.

2).Glucose and oxygen

A single reaction in photosynthesis will create one glucose molecule and six oxygen molecules.

3). True

The balanced equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2 Photosynthesis can be represented using a chemical equation: Carbon dioxide + water + light energy gives a carbohydrate + oxygen.

4). D. Red and Blue

Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue portion of theelectromagnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion.

5). B. Thylakoids

In photosynthesis, the light-dependent reactions take place on the thylakoid membranes. The inside of the thylakoid membrane is called the lumen, and outside the thylakoid membrane is the stroma, where the light-independent reactions take place.

6). A. Photolysis

Photolysis. When the electrons leave the chlorophyll molecules, it leaves behind a 'hole.' This electron hole is filled in by a water molecule that is oxidized, or loses electrons, as it essentially splits into two hydrogen atoms, or protons, and an oxygen atom.

7). C. NADPH and ATP

Although the light-independent reactions do not use light as a reactant (and as a result can take place at day or night), they require the products of the light-dependent reactions to function. The light-independent molecules depend on the energy carrier molecules, ATP and NADPH, to drive the construction of new carbohydrate molecules.

8). E. NADPH

The sum of reactions in the Calvin cycle is the following:

3 CO2 + 6 NADPH + 5 H2O + 9 ATP → glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) + 2 H+ + 6NADP+ + 9 ADP + 8 Pi   (Pi = inorganic phosphate)

9). B. Oxygen

During photosynthesis: Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll, a green substance found in chloroplasts in some plant cells and algae. Absorbed light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide (from the air) and water (from the soil) into a sugar called glucose. Oxygen is released as a by-product.

  • How Do Chloroplasts Capture Energy from the Sun?

How Do Chloroplasts Capture Energy from the Sun? Plant cells and some algae contain an organelle called the chloroplast. The chloroplast allows plants to harvest energy from sunlight, a process known as photosynthesis. Specialized pigments in the chloroplast absorb sunlight and use this energy combine carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen. The complete reaction is: 6CO2 + 6H2O + C6H12O6 + 6O2 Raw Materials (Reactants) CO2 = carbon dioxide H2O = water Products C6H1206 = glucose O2 = oxygen Plant cells can...
