kinetochores are protein complex on the chromosome at the centromere where the mitotic spindle attaches, mitotic spindle attaches to the chromosomes during prometaphase and align the chromosomes on the metaphase plate if the kinetochores are missing mitotic spindle cannot attach to the chromosomes and align it to the metaphase plate, so the cell cannot pass metaphase checkpoint.

cohesin holds two sister chromatids, cohesin protein is degraded during anaphase to separate sister chromatids.
