The question is based on the identification of an unknown compound to be an alcohol, aldehyde or keytone.

Give three reasons why acetone may interfere with your result.

I think that the presence of acetone will give false positives for Iodoform reaction, DNP test while the unknows might not be (methyl ketones or aldehydes or ketones) for that matter, what could a third reason be?

Answer #1

Both acetone and aldehyde contains C=O group.

so

give false positives for DNP test.

and

third reason:C=0 + NaHso, + R H aldehyde OH 50,Na crystal product ROH H, C SO,Na crystal product R C= + NaHSO, + H, ketone

give  false positives for NaHSO3 test at which crystallized water soluble products obtained in both aldehyde and ketone.

i need help with the prelab questions please Grignard reagent THE GRIGNARD REAGENT-PREPARATION AND REACTION In this experiment, you will prepare a Grignard reagent, phenyl magnesium bromide, from bromobenzene and magnesium metal. The Grignard reagent will then react with methyl benzoate to form triphenylmethanol. Introduction Grignard reagents, such as organomagnesium halides, were discovered in 1910 by French chemist Victor Grignard. The Grignard reaction is one of the most general methods for carbon- carbon bond formation in all of organic chemistry....
