The standard potentials at pH=0 for the couples Fe2+/Fe and Fe3+/Fe2+ are -0.44V and 0.77V, respectively. Should we expect Fe2+ to disproportionate in a deaerated acidic aqueous solution? Explain briefly.

Answer #1

The disproportionation reaction would be Fe2+ -> Fe + Fe3+

Hence for a reaction to be feasible its E0 should be positive hence we can see the E0=-0.44-0.77=-1.21 V

The potentials are added according to the direction of the reaction like Fe2+ -> Fe is known and Fe2+ -> Fe3+ is negative of what is given.

Hence we can see as the E0 is negative the reaction cannot occur.

please give a thumbs up as it matters a lot. In case there are doubts leave a comment.
