You are building a linear particle accelerator at the equator such that the charged particles travel in a straight line parallel to the ground. In what direction should the accelerator be oriented to minimize the effect of the earth’s magnetic field, that is in what direction should the particles travel so that the magnetic force is zero?

(a) The particles should travel straight upward toward outer space.

(b) The particles should travel east-west.

(c) The particles should travel north-south.

Answer #1

As we know that earth's magnetic field direction is in north south direction so if particle will move in that direction the magnetic force on the particle will be zero.

F= q(V*B)= qVBsin(theta) if V and B will be in same direction the net force will be zero so particle will move in straight line

So ans is (c)

A velocity selector is used in accelerator mass spectrometry to select particles based on their speed. The velocity selector is composed of orthogonal electric and magnetic fields, such that particles with the correct charge to mass ratio and speed will be unaffected, and other particles will be deflected. If the Electric Field is oriented down, What is the direction of the Magnetic Field? A charged particle moves through the velocity selector at a constant speed in a straight line. The electric field...
