What were the events that led up to and the fall of the Berlin Wall?
Even months before the fall of the Berlin wall, the leaders of Germany were confident with the need of the wall even making statements on the lines of 'the wall is going to stay for 100 years if the need be'. Soon after that a 20 year old young man was killed at the wall while he was trying to cross the wall, this agitated the already discomforted public. Fortunately, that 20 year old man was the last person to be killed at the Berlin wall. In September 1989, the first of then what eventually became the weekly demonstrations that took place on Monday were organised at Leipzig.
In October 1989, the visiting Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev urged the leadership of the state to take major reforms in the manner in which the state was being governed. Soon Honecker was removed from the helms of power of East Germany which he comfortably ruled for about 18 years. After the change in leadership and other social scenarios, the Monday protests stood out a lot more and were attracting a large number of protesters. Soon, the largest pro-democracy protests took place in East Berlin's central Alexanderplatz where it is estimated that over 500,000 protesters took place. Finally on 9th Nov. 1989, the Easy Germany opened it heavily guarded border for the public.
