Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was identified in the year 2012 in Saudi Arabia. The virus was was isolated and identified by Dr. Ali Mohamed Zaki, an Egyptian virologist from an infected lungs of a patient. The findings where posted on ProMED-mail on 24 September 2012. After several cases with similar symptoms and deaths appeared in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, research on the virus began.
