Ans. There is one maternal chromosome number 1 (label it as 1M for simplicity) and there is also a fraternal chromosome number 1 (label it as 1F). 1M and 1F are called homologous chromosomes with respect to each other. During replication 1F is replicated to form 1F’’ – both remain together till metaphase as (1F- 1F”) sister chromatids. Similarly, (1M – 1M”) remains together.

# The centromere is a point of constriction where sister chromatids are held together.

# The X and Y chromosomes constitute the sex-chromosomes.

# All the chromosomes except X and Y-chromosomes are autosomes.

# The cytological size-wise arrangement of chromosomes of an organism is called its karyotype.
