Students may either choose to describe normal lifespan changes to the respiratory system OR describe one respiratory system disorder. If you choose the later, note what anatomical changes to the respiratory system produce physiological challenges to the system.

Asthma is one of the grave respiratory system disorders. It is a long term disease. In an asthma patient, the bronchial tube muscles become thick and tight. This makes the air passage congested with mucous,inflamed and difficult for the air to travel to and from the lungs. This thickening and tightening of the bronchial muscles are generally caused by allergic reactions like pollen allergy, dust allergy, pollution, etc. In a normal person, the bronchial muscles are relaxed and the airflow is smooth.
