Question

Homework In this assignment you will be asked questions about water and osmotic pressure. Complete the assignment as directed and post your answer to the message board. Remember, do not upload files, I may not be able to open them so just leave everything on your post for me to read. You may use internet resources to respond but do not, that is do not, copy and paste from web sites. Also, using quotes does not make something your own work. Read from several sources and put things into your own words as you understand it. Anything else is a violation of the academic integrity policy. The directions are posted here as well as on the message board itself Directions: You may only be faintly aware of the fact that drinking salt water besides tasting kinda bad, can also be very dangerous. Since we all need to take in water on a daily basis due to daily loss, finding water in an emergency situation is critical when we may have trouble finding water. One of the first priorities in a survival situation is to find water. Food you can do without for some time but without water, dangerous dehydration can set in. However, its possible to dehydrate to death even when completely surrounded by water, such as being adrift at sea. (Ever ee Tom Hanks in Castaway?) The last thing youd want to do is start drinking ocean water. In one paragraph summarize what you find online about what happens to your body when you drink sea water Speaking of salt water, you may have been in the hospital one time for an operation or due to an illness. When admitted to a hospital one of the first thing theyll do is start an IV line by hooking you up to a little hanging bag of, can you believe it, salt water (or a sugar solution which has the same effect). If drinking salt water is so bad for you, why does one routinely get an IV of sterile saline when you get sick? Think about what happens to your cells, especially red blood cells, when youre given a saline solution rather than just plain old sterile water. Write a second paragraph explaining this mystery. Be sure to relate this material to the content in this lesson, particularly the section on osmosis. Use the big words you have learned.

Answer #1

When we get sick, sometimes we get IV saline solution. This is used to keep the hydration level normal for the pateint with water and at the same time NaCl present in the solution helps muscle and nerves so that they can work properly. Saline water which is used in IV is 0.9% saline and is isotonic in nature meaning the amount of salt present in IV solution is nearly close to what we have in bloodsream. In comparison to this salt water which are coming from outside through srinking might be hypertonic.

As IV saline is nearly isotonic to red blood cell, there will be almost no osmotic movement related to water. As a result the size and as well as the shape of the res blood cell will remain in normal way. On the other hand if only water is used in IV, as water is hypotonic in comparison to RBC, they will absorb water and swell up. As a result cells will ultimately burst and the process is called hemolysis. Once RBC bursts, hemoglobin becomes free and this free hemoglobin is comes to circulation and known to toxic for kidney and also responsible for renal shut down.

    2. *D1* Salt water is plentiful on earth; natural supplies of fresh water, on the other hand, are dwindling while mankind's demands grow. One appealing solution to this imbalance is to remove the salt from ocean water by some means. Here you will investigate the energy input that is necessary to accomplish this task. Special membranes can be manufactured that allow water, but not ions, to pass through. By pushing such a membrane through salt solution, one can separate salt...
