Investigative Extensions 1. Earthworms are among the most familiar inhabitants of soil. They play an important role in improving the texture of and adding organic mat- ter to soil. You may have read Darwin's estimate that over 50,000 earth- worms may inhabit one acre of British farmland. Earthworms are readily available from biological supply houses, or you may collect your own to use in experiments. Following are questions that you might investigate. a. Why do earthworms come out of their...

    1. When lime is added to an acid soil, explain what it does to 1) soil pH (and what is the mechanism by which it changes the pH); 2) cation exchange capacity (Hint: Think back to pH-dependent charge to understand the effect on cation exchange capacity.) and; 3) the composition of exchangeable cations. 2. An agriculture lab is trying to improve a type of tomato so that it produces large fruits even under very hot, dry conditions. To do this, they must first identify the genes responsible for the tomato’s response to temperature and moisture. Which experimental approach would be most helpful in doing this? Select one: a. Comparing the target tomato’s genome with those of all tomatoes having large fruits b. Comparing the target tomato’s genome with that of a mutant having all...

Healthcare research is often based on quantitative methods. The variables used in research are measured and recorded as numerical data that can be analyzed by means of statistical tools. The main strength of quantitative methods is it produces factual and reliable outcome data. After the effects of a given drug or treatment have been tested on a sample population, the statistical record of the observed outcomes will provide objective results generally to larger populations. In your opinion why is outcome...

Organophosphates (OPs) are toxic chemicals contained in many pesticides used heavily in agriculture. They can have severe, acute effects, including death, beginning within minutes to hours of exposure. Other symptoms can develop over longer time periods. Exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or, to a lesser extent, contact with skin. The toxicity of OPs stems from their action at cholinergic synapses: these chemicals inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine (ACh) and terminates its action following release into the...
