Gametes are sex cells that include egg and sperm. What is true about the number of chromosomes in gametes versus the parent cells that gave rise to them?

Each of the gamete i.e egg and sperm have half of the chromosomes compared to normal parent cell because they need to combine to form a zygote which now has the same number of chromosome as the parent cell. This is why the gametes are called haploids(Half chromosome in each gamete) while the parents are called diploids.
