Question

You will be creating a physical prototype of a design that you model in SolidWorks.

- You are to create an assembly that consists of a two stage gear train.

- The dimensions of the base will be 3.25 inches by 1.6 inches with a thickness of 0.15 inches.

- Your overall gear ratio will be 9:1.

- The face width of the gears will be 0.20 inches.

- The pitch diameter of all gears must be less than or equal to 1.5 inches. Remember that the relation between the pitch diameter, the diametral pitch, and the number of teeth is

# of teeth pitch diameter diametral pitch --

Two gears will mate if they have the same diametral pitch.

- No gears may extend outside of the 3.25"x1.6" size of the base (as viewed from above).

- The pressure angle for the gears will be 20 degrees.

- The bore diameter for the gears will be 0.25".

- The gears must be constrained so they do not come detached from the base.

- Design your system so that there is 0.010 inch vertical clearance and 0.02 radial clearance between the base and the gears. For the radial clearance, since the bore diameter for the gears is 0.25", the diameter of the peg should be 0.21" (a diameter difference of 0.04" will have a radial clearance of 0.02").

- Make sure that the gear teeth do not touch.

- Add holes in the side of the spacer which will help when the support material is being dissolved.

- Your end cap diameters must be smaller than your dedendum circle diameter of your gears.

- Write your last name as an extrusion on the base. Use a font height of at least 0.2 inches. (The font height is the size of the font, not the extrusion distance of the lettering.) Make the font bold.

You work for a gearbox company and have been charged with helping to design a geared countershaft for a speed reducing gearbox. The gearbox consists of a compound reverted gear train as shown below and is to be designed for an exact 16:1 speed reduction ratio. The input motor provides 10-horsepower which is carried through the gear train and operates at a speed of 2,000 rpm. You are asked to consider spur gears with a 20° pressure angle and 4...
