Answer #1

Relation between change in length and temperature change is given by:

dL = L - L0 = L0*alpha*dT

dT = temperature change = 35 C - 20 C = 15 C

alpha = Coefficient of linear expansion = 1.2*10^-5 per C

L0 = actual length = ?

dL = change in length = L - L0

L = distance measured at 35 C = 35.694 m

So,

L0 = L/(1 + alpha*dT)

L0 = 35.694/(1 + 1.2*10^-5*15)

L0 = 35.688 m = actual length measured

    An aluminum measuring rod, which is correct at 5.0 C measures a certain distance as 88.42 cm at 35.0 C.Determine the error in measuring the distance due to the expansion of the rod. If this aluminum rod measures a length of steel as 88.42cm at 35.0 C, what is the correct length of the steel at 35 degrees C? The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminum is 22 x10^-6 C^-1.
