Answer #1

Kelp attach themselves to rocks by means of a structure called holdfast.

Kelps are large brown seaweed that typically has a long, tough stalk with broad frond divided into strips. Despite its appearance, kelp is not a plant; it is a heterokont. Kelp grows in "underwater forests" in shallow oceans, and is thought to have appeared in the Miocene, 5 to 23 million years ago.

At the bottom of the kelp there are "roots"of the kelp known as holdfast . This root like structure enables the kelp to attach itself to a rock. At the holdfast, animals like sea urchins, brittle stars, sea stars, and sponges thrive. These holdfasts hold the kelp firmly attached to rocks, so that even when currents are at their strongest, kelp is no danger of being swept away.
