It is definitely necessary that you know your client otherwise, what you develop will not will not satisfy the intended purpose. Say , you develop a website for an insurance client for their day-to-day business. As developers you have to provide the user interface in such a way that the underwriters of the insurance business find it easy to complete their quoting tasks effectively.

One must also understand the business in order to develop a product for the same. If we dont know what the client or the end user is about to do with the product, then we are blindly just putting some lines of code out there. A website for the underwriters of an insurance company is to be developed by a team of developers. These developers need to understand what type of functionalities the underwriters do on a daily basis, what tedious tasks they face while making insurance quotes, so that those functionalities can be developed with more accuracy and effectively. This way of undertsanding the business for the product being developed would provide more sense and also it makes things easier for the developer in the course of time to provide better functionalities.
