Question

Note: Hand in your data table and questions/comments The carbon footprint that we can consider is one part of the overall greenhouse emissions that occur on the planet. Carbon dioxide cornes from many sources naturally; however we can consider the amount that is emitted from the use of electricity, fossil fuels, acquiring our food, processing of goods, manufacturing, and consumption of food, materials, roads, wood, roads, buildings, and services. As you can see it is impossible to measure all of the carbon that is utilized. There is the carbon footprint that you interact with indirectly from goods that you purchase and there is the direct carbon footprint, the fuel you burn in your home and car. A) For this part of the assignment you will get a rough estimate for your carbon footprint. You have a choice of four tools to calculate your footprint. footprintnetwork.org) Global Footprint Network (myfootprint.org) Ecological Footprint (epa.gov) EPA Household Carbon Footprint (Coolclimate.berkley.edu) Cool Climate Network (Click on Cool Climate for Households) B) When you have completed your carbon footprint go to Cool Climate Network, click on the Carbon Footprint map. Find your town and enter the metric ton carbon dioxide and the data from the graph on the data table attached. 1. 2. 3. 4. Considering your data where was the greatest impact in your carbon footprint? What might you realistically consider doing to reduce your carbon footprint? What is one impact that you can identify that would result from your current carbon footprint? How does your carbon footprint compare to your hometowns data? Part 2 Looking at the Global Carbon Footprint C) Using the website Carbon Footprint of Nations (carbonfootprintofnations.com) Under Data Visualization tab, click on the Carbon Map, when opened it should be on All regions (default). In the upper left is the box with: Tons CO2, GDP and Population. Using your mouse scroll over the countries that are colored and notice how that box changes. If you click on a country it will be posted on the graph in the upper middle. Write down the data for the US on the data table.
