societal and environmental influence contribute to eating disorders in adolescence. This can be seen in adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa. Adolescents diagnosed with anorexia nervosa generally have a history of neglect or physical abuse which becomes a reason for an eating disorder. due to the prolonged verbal abuse or other traumatic environmental conditions adolescent become conscious of even minor flaws and spend most of the time to rectify it. In anorexia nervosa person becomes conscious about weight and indulge in excessive exercises and extreme diet control.

Societal pressure also contribute to eating disorders. physical beauty and a slim physique are considered synonymous of being beautiful and attractive. The desire to succeed, accepted and physically pleasing is already high in adolescent. Such societal pressures fuel behaviors associated with eating disorders often manifested as unhealthy dieting.
