Three students A,B,C are nominated for a scholarship which have equal chance of getting a scholarship. Student A asked a professor who knew the result to name one who failed out of the other two nominees. Professor answered it was C. A claimed that his chance has now increased from 1/3 to 1/2. Another student asked what if the professor's answer is student B? A replied that his chance would also be increased to 1/2. The classmate replied that "if your chance will be 1/2 whatever the professor's answer is , why did you have to ask?"

Explain who is right.

Answer #1

A's classmate is right.

Any of the three students A,B or C can get scholarship

Now, irrespective of whether A gets the scholarship or not there will be atleast one more student who do not get the scholarship

So whenever A asks the professor to name one who failed, the professor would have a name of either B or C or both.

Thus, asking the name of one who failed out to the professor does not help A to know or increase chances of him getting the scholarship
