An animal has a diploid chromosome number of 40. Which of the following statements is FALSE?

a) there are 80 chromatids present during prophase of mitosis

b) there are 40 chromatids present during prophase II of meiosis

c) there are 40 chromosomes present in each cell at the end of mitosis

Answer #1

Answer: (e) All of the above are true.

Explanation:

* There will be 80 chromatids in prophase of mitosis, because during S-phase the chromosome number starts to double. Hence statement 'a' will be correct.

* Meiosis is a also known as reductional division. The chromosome number halves in meiosis I itself, however in the meiosis II there will be 20 chromosomes having 40 chromatids. Hence statement 'b' is also correct.

* After the end of mitosis as it is equational division, each cell will have diploid number that is 40 chromosomes. Hence statement 'c' is also correct.

* Each chromosome has its homologous pair, for 40 chromosomes in a diploid cell there will be 20 homologous pairs. Hence statement 'd' is also correct.

Can someone please check my answer? Understanding chromosome number and behavior during cell division is an important concept in genetics. Fill out the chart below for each phase of mitosis in terms of N (where N = haploid number). For example, humans have a haploid number of 23. There are 46 chromosomes (2N) present in prophase of mitosis. Each chromosome is present in its replicated form (i.e. as sister chromatids) so there will be 2 chromatids per chromosome and the...

What is a major difference between mitosis and meiosis I in a diploid organism? Only meiosis I results in daughter cells that contain identical genetic information. Sister chromatids separate in mitosis; homologous pairs of chromosomes separate in meiosis I. Sister chromatids separate in mitosis; homologous pairs of chromosomes separate in meiosis II. ODNA replication takes place prior to mitosis, but not before meiosis I.
