Answer #1

F = n*A*dv/dy

n = kinematic viscosity of oil = approx 0.992 poise

A= 0.4 x 104 cm2

dv = 25cm/s

dy = 16 mm = 1.6 cm

Since the thin plate has same oil on either side the data of 12 mm from one side becomes irrelevant.

F = 0.9928 x 0.4 x 104 x 25/1.6 = 62.05 x 103 Dyne = 62.05 x 103/ 105 = 0.6205 N.

    Prob 1 • Two fixed parallel horizontal plates contains oil (SAE 30) which flows steadily in-between the channel. The pressure drop per unit length along the channel is 30 kPa/m, and the distance between the plates is 4 mm. The temperature of the oil is at 15.6°C. Assuming the flow is laminar, determine: (a) Volume flow rate (per meter of width) (b) Magnitude and direction of the shearing stress acting on the bottom of plate (c) The velocity along the...
