In a closed rigid vessel that does not have any type of work interactions with the surroundings the amount of heat that needs supplied to heat a liquid inside the container can be determined by the change in internal energy. Suppose you have a sealed pan with 1 liter of water at 20 °C and 100 kPa that you want to heat to 70 °C. Do the following:
a. Represent the process on a T-v diagram. Indicate T (°C) and v (m3/kg) values and draw the corresponding isobars.
b. Determine the amount of heat that needs to be supplied such that the resulting temperature is 70 °C.
Hint: for pure substances in a compressed liquid state the value of thermodynamic properties, in absence of compressed liquid tables, can be approximated as equal to the saturated liquid value of the property at the temperature of the substance.
