BaSO4 dissociates to form Ba2+ and SO42—.

BaSO4 <—> Ba2+ + SO42—.

Since by dissociating BaSO4 equimolar amount of Ba2+ and SO42—are produced thus [ Ba2+ ] = [ SO44—] .

The solution contains 0.40 M of SO42— thus the concentration of Ba2+ will be 0.40 M.

Thus the molar solubility of BaSO4 will be 0.40 M = 4× 10—1 M.
