Q: A 36 year old mother of four is considering tubal ligation as means of ensuring that her family gets no larger. She asks the physician if she will become "Menopausal" after the surgery. How would you answer her question and what normally causes these symptoms?

Answer:

Tubal ligation is a abdominal surgical procedure for sterilization in which a woman's fallopian tubes are clamped or blocked. In this process the fallopian tubes are surgically severed and then ligated to prevent the eggs from reaching or travelling to the uterus thereby preventing implantation. Menopause (climacteric) is the absence of menstural periods for a duration of 12 months. Recently non surgical tubal ligation procedures have also been developed and are in use.

Some women after undergoing Tubal ligation procedure may develop perimenopause symptoms and in rare cases this procedure may cause premature menopause. These early menopause symptoms occur due to sudden drop in estrogen and progesterone levels are temporary and short term.
