Once the protein is synthetized in the ribosomes (producing a polypeptide chain) will undergo at the instant a post-translational modification by several enzymes. This a fast process but it require a lot of energy since the enzymatic machinery depends on ATP. An example of these modifications is when a prohormone (synthetized in the ribosome) is converted into a hormone by several modifications.
