Answer #1

Answer: Fetal DNA is obtained from maternal blood, so the fetus is not affected by the test.

Explanation: cffDNA testing is done to test for aneuploidy i.e. abnormal number of chromosomes in the fetus. For the testing, mother’s blood plasma is taken.

cffDNA is the cell free fetal DNA which is circulating into maternal blood during gestation. The mother’s cell free DNA is also present in mother’s plasma but cell free fetal DNA comes from the placental trophoblast and are smaller than the maternal cell free DNA, this cffDNA is removed from the maternal blood after delivery. If there is a positive result then that needs to be confirmed with the invasive technique like amniocentesis.
