Answer #1

Based on question and the options available, the correct answer is Option D - Dr. Jones, a self-employed general dentist, attends a two-day seminar on developing a dental practice.

Option A is incorrect. Paul has spent the summer break in France , Portugal and Spain improving his language skills. This expense does not qualify as a travel expense deduction because the main purpose of the travel was not related to the profession which Paul pursues.

Option B is incorrect. Myrna was on a vacation. The vacation expenses generally do not qualify as a travel expense deduction.

Option C is incorrect. Dr. Brown has attended a seminar on financial planning. While attending a seminar on the surgery process and related ones would have made him eligible for a travel expense deduction, a seminar on financial planning would not be eligible.

Option D is correct. Dr.Jones, a self employed general dentist attends a two-day seminar on developing a dental practice. Per IRS, any travel expense incurred that is ordinary and necessary for your business, profession or job are allowed to be deducted as a travel expense. As in the case of Dr.Jones, we observe that he has attended the two-day seminar on developing a dental practice. Further, we also note that Dr.Jones is a self employed general dentist. As such, this is a valid travel expense and would be allowed for deduction for Dr.Jones

Option E is incorrect because all choices are not correct and only Option D is correct.
