Answer #1
  • Identity refers to conception of oneself as a member of a certain social. Generally,we communicate our identities through gender, culture, status, ideologies etc. Some identities are chosen by us like for example, becoming a member of a dance society, this reflects our social identity.
  • Sometimes we communicate with other based upon gender. The communication behaviors we choose based on assumptions of gender are often far more important. We develop a gender identity based on our conception of ourselves as male or female.
  • Identities can be communicated based upon status as well. Women in male-dominated work-places who perceive themselves to be of a lower social status than men are likely to downplaytheir femininity (e.g., speak assertively and wear masculine clothes) and view themselves interms of identities other than “female”. Or, consider the identity of amale construction worker who is also a wine connoisseur. When he goes to a party, he might choose to emphasize either his line of work or his passion for and knowledge of wine, dependingon how he thinks others in the group will evaluate his social status.
  • Cultural Identity in addition to our gender and social identities, our culture is another source of influence on our identity, self-concept, and communication patterns. It gives us a set of beliefs and assumptionsthat guide how we view the world. Culture includes everything that makes up our way of life, including shared values, knowledge, behaviors, and symbolic expression.
  • For example, in the United States, people tend tovalue personal independence and direct talk, while in many Asian countries, personal identity is based on relationships with families and communities, and the way people talk is guided by the expectations of others.
  • I generally use my cultural identity and my ideologies to communicate myself to others. The culture that I have been brought up in has largely shaped my personality and therefore my thoughts as well about various things in life.
  • Culture refers to the shared values, beliefs and norms of a specific group of people. Cultural identity therefore, influences the manner we learn, live and behave. Because of this, many theorists believe that culture is an important shaper of our personality.
  • Cultural identity has to do with the customs of a people, and society with the people who are practicing these customs.Religious identity is part of cultural inheritance, yet two peoples can share a culture yet practice different religions. For example,in Asian culture or Eastern culture, people follow hinduism and islam both. But have the same cultural values in terms of lifestyle, food, clothes, family values etc.
  • Our Cultural identity and religious identity can be different because religion is a part of culture. Religious identity reflects people's belief systems about god an specific rituals they follow which are different for every religion. Cultural identity determines our way of life and is based on share values of human beings.
