The newly synthesized weak acid was designed for use in created buffers hat protect proteins during purification. You are told to make 0.2 Liters of a 25mM solution of the weak acid with a pH of 8.5. Determine the moles of each buffering species required in the solution? (hint: you only use one pKa value)

Answer #1

total moles of buffer = 0.2 x 25 x 10^-3 = 5 x 10^-3

pH = 8.5

pKa of HBrO = 8.55

pH = pKa + log [salt / acid]

8.5 = 8.55 + log [salt / acid]

[salt / acid] = 0.891

[salt + acid] = 0.005

0.891 acid + acid = 0.05

acid moles = 0.0264

conjugate base moles = 0.0236

    It's a weak acid strong base titration Experiment 4: Identification of an unknown acid by titration Page 2 of 15 Background In this experiment, you will use both qualitative and quantitative properties to determine an unknown acid's identity and concentration. To do this analysis, you will perform a titration of your unknown acid sample-specifically a potentiometric titration where you use a pH meter and record pH values during the titration, combined with a visual titration using a color indi- cator...
