U.S v. Ivanov case is a landmark case in the history of computer technology. Aleksey Vladimirovich Ivanov was from Russia who was living in the United States. While he was in Russia, he stole the information from Online Information Bureau. The court considered the crime including stealing information, computer fraud etc. although it was committed while Ivanov was in Russia. It was the intention and the damage that caused to the American company that was considered as crimes. He was later trialed in 5 other district courts for the same crime and finally sentenced to 48 months prison with 3 months supervised parole. Many agreed to the decision because they were all in favor of protecting the rights of the US companies and people against future computer frauds. This also brought out the importance of the Patriotic Act that extended the crimes related to computer beyond US territories.
