A supply plane needs to drop a package of food to scientists working on a glacier in Greenland. The plane flies 150m above the glacier at a speed of 130m/s.

How far short of the target should it drop the package?   

Answer

The speed of the plnae v = 130m/s

the height of the plane h = 150m

the time taken to reach the traget

            t = ?2h/g

              = ?2*150/9.8

              = 5.53 sec

Therefore the package dropped at a distance

       x = v*t

            = (130)(5.53)

            = 718.9 m or 719 m

Vo = 140 m/s
g = 9.80665 m/s^2 (definition of standard Earth gravity)

R = Vo * SQRT [ 2H / g }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { [ 2 * (130 m/s) ] / (9.80665 m/s^2) }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { [ 260 m/s ] / (9.80665 m/s^2) }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { 28.55 s^2 }
R = (140 m/s) * (5.34 s)
R = 758 m
