A supply plane needs to drop a package of food to scientists working on a glacier in Greenland. The plane flies 130m above the glacier at a speed of 140m/s .
How far short of the target should it drop the package?

A supply plane needs to drop a package of food to scientists
working on a glacier in Greenland. The plane flies 150m above the
glacier at a speed of 130m/s.
How far short of the target should it drop the package?
Answer
The speed of the plnae v = 130m/s
the height of the plane h = 150m
the time taken to reach the traget
t = ?2h/g
= ?2*150/9.8
= 5.53 sec
Therefore the package dropped at a distance
x = v*t
= (130)(5.53)
= 718.9 m or 719 m
H = 130 m
Vo = 140 m/s
g = 9.80665 m/s^2 (definition of standard Earth gravity)
R = Vo * SQRT [ 2H / g }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { [ 2 * (130 m/s) ] / (9.80665 m/s^2) }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { [ 260 m/s ] / (9.80665 m/s^2) }
R = (140 m/s) * SQRT { 28.55 s^2 }
R = (140 m/s) * (5.34 s)
R = 758 m

A plane drops a package of food to stranded caribou on an ice flow in the Arctic circle. The plane flies 207.11 m above the ice at a speed of 144.48 m/s. How far short of the target should it drop the package?
(Figure 1)A relief airplane is delivering a food package to a group of people stranded on a very small island. The island is too small for the plane to land on, and the only way to deliver the package is by dropping it. The airplane flies horizontally with constant speed of 462 km/hour at an altitude of 575 m. The positive x and y directions are defined in the figure. For all parts, assume that the "island" refers to the...
A rescue plane wants to drop supplies to isolated mountain climbers on a rocky ridge 235m below. If the plane is traveling horizontally with a speed of 250 km/h (69.4 m/s), (a) how far in advance of the recipients (horizontal distance) must the goods be dropped. (b) Suppose, instead that the plane releases the supplies a horizontal distance of 425 m in advance of the mountain climbers. What vertical velocity (up or down) should the supplies be given so that...
A rescue plane wants to drop supplies to isolated mountain climbers on a rocky ridge 235 m below. Part A: If the plane is traveling horizontally with a speed of 256 km/h (71.1 m/s ), how far in advance of the recipients (horizontal distance) must the goods be dropped (see the figure Answer: 492m Part B: Suppose, instead, that the plane releases the supplies a horizontal distance of 425 m in advance of the mountain climbers. What vertical velocity (up...
