1. There is a huge opportunity for change in this system. The admitting clerk is overwhelmed with patients that they have to process and cannot effectively code everyone when needed. There needs to be either a system that can automatically log when the patient arrives at or leaves a department so that everyone can effectively do their job and log data accurately and not from memory.

2. I believe that a cross-functional PI team would be helpful because this would involve several different areas of the hospital. The only concern that I hve is that a PI team may take longer to study then give recommendations than the hospital can wait. There needs to be something short term done to improve this immediately.

3. The Performance improvement (PI) team should include a manager of the admitting and patient accounting department, someone from information center or admitting clerk and the head of the nursing staff. One person from each of these fields since they are the one who will impact their daily routine job at Western State University. The nursing, and the admitting departments should be represented since they are the ones who are working closely with the two systems. They each have their own parts in recording information into the system. My rationale for including each individual is that, the nursing and the admitting staff needs to find a common ground that will work will both fields including charges and the patient’s information into the system accurately. The accounting department also needs to be aware of where the information iscoming from so that if they have any enquiries about a patient’s charges they will know who to contact for the missing information.
