Linkage between alleles is said to exist when the recombinant frequency between the two alleles is less than 50% This is because if the distance is more than 50%, it means the two alleles exist on different chromosomes. This is due to the fact that only two of the chromosomes of the homologous pair participate in synapsis. Therefore, at least 50% of the offspring should have the same allele arrangement as the heterozygous parents.
