Answer #1

Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information.

Anaphase I is the stage of meiosis where the cell starts to lengthen and the two homologs of each chromosome pair separate and move toward opposite poles, drawn by the microtubules of the spindle apparatus.

Consider the following diagram which depicts a particular anaphase of cell division in an animal. Assume that in this animal there is NO crossing-over, either in mitosis or meiosis! Can you tell for sure whether this is anaphase of mitosis, or anaphase I of meiosis, or anaphase II of meiosis? If so, what is the diploid number of this cell?

Can someone please check my answer? Understanding chromosome number and behavior during cell division is an important concept in genetics. Fill out the chart below for each phase of mitosis in terms of N (where N = haploid number). For example, humans have a haploid number of 23. There are 46 chromosomes (2N) present in prophase of mitosis. Each chromosome is present in its replicated form (i.e. as sister chromatids) so there will be 2 chromatids per chromosome and the...

    7. INDICATE IF TRUE OR FALSE 1. Synapsis usually forms between nonsister chromatids. 2. 2. A diploid cell contains two pairs of chromosomes, which we will call 1 and 2. Assume chromosome! is clearly larger than chromosome 2. Each chromosome pair contains a maternal and a paternal member (e.g. 1 and 1 & 2 and 2"). An allele called G is localized to 1" whereas an allele called g is on chromosome 1P. Allele R is localized to 2m whereas alleler is localized to 2. Using these designations and clearly drawn and labeled chromosomes,...
