Renewable Energy
Renewable resources are the resources that have a natural origin and are replaced and replenished by nature upon their consumption and usage. These renewable resources are a part of the natural environment of Earth, and their replenishment may take place through the naturally occurring processes or via natural reproduction. Renewable resources are the source of renewable energy and include sunlight (solar energy), tides (marine energy), geothermal heat/energy, wind, and others. Energy derived from the renewable sources is used in transportation, generation of electricity, in water/air heating and cooling, and in the off-grid or rural energy services.
Wind Energy
The power of wind can rotate the wind turbines through their flow, and the mechanical power can be used to operate the electric generators. Wind energy may also be used for pumping and milling among other purposes.
The wind is a clean energy source which means that wind energy does not pollute the environment like the thermal power plants do when they consume coal or other non-renewable energy sources. It is also a domestic energy source, which means that a nation does not have to import it. The use of wind energy and resource is sustainable. Winds occur when the sun heats up the atmosphere of the earth. Therefore, as long as the sun shines, there will be wind and wind energy. The technology related to wind power and energy is also less costly.
Solar Energy
The sun is the most powerful heat source. Its heat and radiant light can be harnessed by using the solar panels (consisting of photovoltaic cells), solar heating, artificial photosynthesis, and solar architecture, among other technologies. The energy thus obtained is termed as solar energy.
Like other non-renewable energy sources, solar energy is also non-polluting and is available throughout the planet earth. Solar energy provides for sustainable development and because the technology is very simple, it can be used in the difficult-to-access and rural areas as well. Photovoltaic cells can directly convert solar energy into electricity and have a low maintenance cost. Solar energy is one of the best way ways to increase wealth locally, as lesser energy imports would be required upon the use of the heat source. Solar energy prevents global warming and is inexhaustible. It is also very modular and versatile and can be adapted for different and specific consumption scenarios.
Hydro-Energy
Hydro energy is derived from the flow of water. For instance, the hydroelectric power stations convert the movement or kinetic energy of the water in the form of electrical energy, which is subsequently used in the commercial and residential settings. While the hydroelectric dams generate electricity on a much larger scale, the “run of river” installations produce hydroelectricity on a smaller scale, through the turning of the turbines.
All major nations today have hydroelectric power stations. The massive stations produce large amounts of electricity through the use of hydropower, which is a green and renewable source of energy. Unlike wind energy, hydroelectricity may be a more reliable source of energy. It also offers more flexibility as the water flows can be adjusted.
BioEnergy
Wind energy is also a kind of renewable energy, which is derived from materials that are obtained through biological sources. Materials including manure, crop residues, straw, wood waste, sugarcane, and other substances that are obtained as a byproduct of agriculture can be used for generating energy and are termed as biomass. The biomass or biofuel has the solar energy stored in the form of chemical energy, which is subsequently converted to other useful forms of energy.
Biomass can be used to produce both electricity and heat unlike other renewable sources of energy that may only produce electricity. Biofuels and biomass support a number of industries including food processing and agriculture industries are entirely biodegradable, and their use also improves air quality. When the biomass is not put to proper use and burnt the fields, it deteriorates the air quality of the surrounding environment. Bioenergy provides for rural economic development and creates employment opportunities. Use of biomass for producing energy reduces landfills and lessens the pressure on the finite and limited natural resources.
Geothermal Energy
The energy that is generated as well as stored within the earth is termed as geothermal energy. The fission of radioactive materials within the earth may cause heating up of the surrounding rocks. These regions are termed “hot spots”. The water in the area also gets heated up and forms steam. It comes out from the earth in the form of hot spring and is a source of geothermal power.
There can be also other sources of geothermal power. For instance, the entire earth surface, up to a 10 feet distance has a constant temperature in between 10°C to 16° C. Geothermal heat pumps are nowadays used to utilize the resource for cooling and heating buildings. Geothermal energy does not cause environmental pollution and there are no emissions to cause global warming. It is a reliable and renewable source of energy. The geothermal heat pumps used for modulating the temperature of buildings use up to 50% less electricity when compared to the traditional systems of air modulation. There are no by-products or wastes associated with this source of energy, and the maintenance cost of the geothermal power plants and pumps is also very less. The best thing is that geothermal energy does not depend on weather conditions.
Marine Energy
Marine energy is also known by the name “marine and hydrokinetic energy” and ocean energy. It is the energy that is carried by ocean tides, waves, salinity, and the oceanic temperature differences. This kinetic energy can be converted into other useful forms of energy and is harnessed for generating electricity that may be used in industries, transport, and in residential areas.
Marine energy does not produce any waste products or the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. There are absolutely no fuels required to create this energy. Tidal energy is highly predictable, as weather forecasting technologies are now much improved. It is also relatively easy to harness wind energy as there is lots of space available close to the oceans. Because the oceans will always exist, the energy sources in entirely renewable.

Reservoir A renewable energy system (it can be solar or wind) does not produce power all the time. So when it is generating power some of the excess is used to pump water into a large reservoir that is 50 m above a lake. When the renewable system cannot produce power (no sunshine or wind) then the water can flow from the reservoir back through the turbine to the lake, producing power. How effective is this energy storage system? chin...
What is the importance of batteries in using renewable energy such as solar and wind power? Batteries are very energy dense. Batteries provide energy even when it's dark and the wind is not blowing. Batteries can be charged when energy is abundant and discharged when energy is not. Batteries can keep electricity flowing even when a cloud passes over head and reduces electricity production from solar panels. Batteries last forever (or at least a long time).
