Research hazardous liquid waste from industries. What waste products are generated by various industries (e.g., dry cleaning, auto repair, paper manufacturing). What happens to these waste products?

Industrial waste products could be categorized into two types. They are recyclable and non recyclable wastes from several industries.

In case of integrated steel plants, particularly in slag granular plant, several tonnes of liquid water is used to cool hot slag. There by hot molten slag granulates into slag particles. Slag is the liquid by-product of blast furnace during iron making. It consists of oxides of iron, aluminium, silicon, carbon, phosphorus and sulphur. Consumption of some of these elements are hazardous to our health. While cooling slag in slag granular plant, water reacts with slag and these toxic elements washes out along with water. Since this liquid waste is non recyclable, it will be pumped into the sea. It will pollute the sea water.

During dry cleaning and automobile repair liquid solvents are used to clean the surface and to remove the dirt. Most of these liquid solvents are non recyclable. Disposal of these liquid solvents leads to pollution.

Chances of waste generation is even more in paper and pulp industry than remaining industries. Because it involves cutting of trees and using water to make paper. It directly and indirectly causing the pollution of our surroundings.

Most of the batteries contains lead. When we throw used batteries outside lead in them will accumulate at that place. There by surrounding air, water and land pollution takes place. Consumption of lead leads to harmful health problems.

Disposal of these liquid wastes without any precaution and proper management leads to problems. If the liquid waste is non hazardous, it can be recycled or disposed. It is always desirable to get little industrial wastes.
