Geomatics Engineering is the science and art of making all essential measurements to determine the physical and cultural details above, on, or beneath the surface of the Earth, and to show them in a usable form, or to establish the position of points or details. Surveying helps in preparation of a plan or a topographical map showing all the features of the area under consideration like river, mountains, bridges, highways, tunnels, dams. Distances and height of each features are measured. The objective of geomatics engineering is

  • To set out the field parameters at the site for further engineering works.

  • The aim of surveying is to prepare a map to show the relative positions of the objects on the surface of the earth.

  • To collect field data.

  • To prepare plan or map of the area surveyed.

  • To analyze and calculate the field parameters for setting out operation of actual engineering works

We can draw maps using surveying to get the idea about the location where the civil engineering project is about to start. like

  • Geological map: Shows area including underground resources.

  • Topographical map: Shows various features like river, village, towns, forest etc.

  • Cadastral map: Shows boundaries of fields, shops, houses and other properties.

  • Contour map: To find best possible routes to the site location.

  • Military map: Helps to identify strategic points within defense area.

  • Archeological map: This includes places of ancient remnants and its existence.

  • Engineering map: Gives details of engineering work like highways, irrigation canals etc.

.Before constructing any big civil engineering project on site, surveying is preliminary part. It help us to know about the soil condition, ground water table location, seismic condition of site. These things will help us in designing and constructing a safe structure.
