Question

18. Penelope is doing research for the city on car speeds on a local neighborhood street. She wants to provide her city council a summary of the speeds cars travel down the street so they may consider changing the speed limit. The council would also benefit from knowing the mean, median and mode of those speeds. Below is the box-and-whisker plot she designed Measured Speeds on Local Street 20 าว 40 50 60 Explain, using complete sentences. whether or not this is the most appropriate format for representing this data and why. If it is not the best format, explain wlhich format should have been used instead

please help? I don't understand this at all :/

some plots, like boxplots and histograms, are designed to give us a big picture idea of a data set. From a box plot we can readily understand the values for median,quartiles, the maximum and minimum value and also the range henceforth.

OUTLIER More than 3/2 times of upper quartile MAXIMUM Greatest value, excluding outliers -UPPER QUARTILE 25% of data greater than this value -MEDIAN 50% of data is greater than this value middle of dataset -LOWER QUARTI LE 25% of data less than this value MINIMUM Least value, excluding outliers OUTLIER Less than 3/2 times of lower quartile

Clearly what we cannot find is the mean and the mode.

Thus in this case the council would not be benefited from knowing the mean and mode.

Thus in this case box plot is not appropriate format for representing the data.

In this case a stem and leaf plot would be appropriate to represent the data.

Now what is a stem and leaf plot.

In stem and leaf plot we first arrange the data in ascending order. Now except the last digits of the numbers we write the other digits in stem form and and write the singular digits beside them, that is called the leaf part

An example:(made on hypothetical data set)

from here one can clearly

scrutinize the data minutely unlike the box and whisker plot.
In this case we can also easily calculate the mean,median and mode.
Mode=the value that appears the most.
In this case supposedly 4|11 that is 41 appears the most.

Median= the middlemost value.
In this case
3|5 5 6
is the middlemost value.( 3 is the middle value in 1,2,3,4,5)
Now in this 35 is the median.

Mean = total of all pieces of data ÷ number of pieces of data
In this case,
Mean=(10+13+16+21+26+27+28+35+35+36+41+41+45+.....+56+58)÷19

Thus in this case we should use a steam and leaf plot instead of box and whisker plot.

(Note: the data used is just for example.)

(Please leave a thumbs up when accepted.)
