A 25.0 ft3 tank contains water at 200 psi, 400oF. A valve connects the tank to a pipe, which has water flowing at 20 psi and 250oF. The valve is opened and fluid is allowed to flow through the valve until the tank conditions are 40 psi, 300oF. The valve is then closed. The surroundings are at T0.

a. Calculate \Delta m, the amount of mass entering or leaving the tank, and \Delta U, the change in internal energy of the mass in the tank.

b. Set up, but do not solve

* The equation that would allow you to solve for the heat transfer.

*The equation that would allow you to determine whether the process is reversible, irreversible, or impossible.

State any assumptions you would make in solving these two equations and simplify them as much as possible using these assumptions (throwing out terms which are zero and substituting known numbers), but do not solve them.
