What is the sedimentation rate in a suspension?

THIS IS THE COMPLETE QUESTION; it's just the approximately sedimentation rate in a suspension, not a solving problem.

a. 10^-5 m/s

b. 10^-2 m/s

c. 10^2 m/s

d. 10^5 m/s

I would think 10^-5

Answer #1

Sedimentation and suspension depend on a variety of factors -
1. Viscosity
2. Mean particle size
3. pH
4. Density of external phases involved
4. Reactions occuring, if any

Now, the increment in viscosity and density can decrease settling/sedimentation rate, while increasing particle size can increase sedimentation. pH and reactions, are dependent on the substances involved.

For a general case, sedimentation follows b. 10-2 m/s, i.e. around 1 cm/s for a particle flow to go down.
