Reason: When you turn off the toaster, you are pulling two conductors apart to break the circuit. As the conductors begin to separate, the high voltage (115 or 230V)can cause breakdown of some of the air molecules in the gap and a small amount of current flows through the ionized air and you see a “spark'.

Why do the lights in a room dim when the refrigerator starts up?

Reason: When refrigerator starts up, it suddenly withdraws huge amount of current through its circuit, which makes the lights dim in the room.

Answer: 1. AC voltages can be readily transformed to higher or lower voltage levels, while it is difficult to do that with DC voltages.

2. Since high voltages are more efficient for sending electricity great distances, AC electricity has an advantage over DC.
